Understanding the Articulated Swimmer Fly with Down Bib

My articulated swimmer with a down bib is one of those flies that you should not be without if fly fish Lake Awonga or any other barra lake.

More often than not I fish this fly on an intermediate line but on occasions when targeting fish that on the sounder I can see holding deep I fish it on a fast sink line.

It’s a fly that works with a range of stripping actions.

    Qantas colours

  1. When I first moved to Central Queensland and starting asking questions about what colours worked for lure fishers targeting barra it seems to me that the colour combination that came up more often than not was the Qantas colours of a red head and a white body. With that little bit of guidance its not surprising that this was the first colour combination that I trailed … my first Awonga barra was on this fly.
  2. The photo below shows the original tie. The tie remains the same today except for the addition of a small lead shot to the leading edge of the bib.
