Patriot

I am not sure of the source of this fly but I have had the recipe in my system for a long time and certainly before the onslaught of Google and internet searching. In the interest of full disclosure I decided to get some history on the fly and so searched ‘patriot fly’. That search gave me hits on a red and blue bodied dry fly but nothing on an olive green wet fly. Despite trying other search options I am none the wiser in relation to this fly. Even though it worked well I dropped it from my fly box because it incorporates bead chain eyes and they are illegal in competition fly fishing. If you not into competition fly fishing its a useful fly. Keep it on hand for use as a deep water search pattern. I am sure that the same pattern would work equally well in black or brown colour also.

Materials

Hook Thread Eyes Weight Tail, body & head
8 to 10  long shank Olive Bead chain Lead wire Olive rabbit fur

  4. Take the thread down to  above the point of the hook and tie in a short tail of rabbit fur.

  1. If your going to add additional weight do it now by wrapping the desired amount of lead along the hook shank directly behind the eyes.
  2. [member Link=”p=2372″ Title=”Adding weight to a fly”]

  3. Return the thread to behind the eyes and tie in a bunch of deer hair  that extend just a little shorter than the tail.

C
  1. Rotate the hook in the vice and tie in additional bunches of rabbit fur until a complete body is formed.

D
  1. Create a dubbing loop and load it with rabbit fur.
  2. [member Link=”p=1639″ Title=”The loop method of dubbing”]

E
  1. Twist the loaded dubbing loop into a rope.

F
  1. Take a couple of turns of the dubbing loop rope behind the eyes and then a figure of  eight wrap of the rope around the eyes and tie it off in front of the eyes.
  2. Trim the excess dubbing loop rope.
  3. Build up a net head of thread in front of the eyes, whip finish and varnish the thread.
