A long time ago I decided that #6 weight fly rods were the right weight of fly rod for still water fishing for trout. Since then i have used #6 weight fly rods in many trout fisheries overseas and in Australia and have never for a minute considered changing to a different rod class.
My travel/ backup fly fishing kit that will act as: A travel fishing kit that can stowed in my van or car to cover those situations when on the road we decide to have an un-programmed stop and a fishing opportunity presents itself. A backup when fishing from either of my boats or from other boats in fishing competitions
This one of those easy recipes that good to have in mind at any time but lend itself to comping trips.
I guess that almost every competition fly fisher has a preference toward set ups for different fishing situations … this is mine.
I have three lines that I fish over this rod depending on conditions. A #4 weight Scientific angle trout series dry fly line, a #4 weight Cortland clear intermediate line and a new #4 weight Rio InTouch Deep 5. This last line is brand new to me but it ticks all the boxes.
Over the last few years myself and most other competition fly fishers have to differing degrees come to grips with the French leader style of fly fishing. That technique for me had evolved into fishing a 9 meter Hends Camou leader. It was a good set up but for me it had severe limitations in anything but a windless day or a day with slight winds at your back.
The amount of dissolved oxygen in water can have a significant effect on fish activity and well being and consequently from a fishing point of view its useful to understand why and when there may be more or less oxygen in water.
I have been keeping a data base record of my fishing outings now for around 15years. When you do a search say on November, December and January for Lake Jindabyne its interesting to see the similarities for that period of time over the years. There is obviously some skewing of the results because as you know , your favourite flies, change over time and of course you tend to fish your favourite flies.
In Tasmania a large percentage of the “Whitebait” taken is of the Galaxiid and Smelt families.
Whitebait are similar in appearance to Galaxiid and populate coastal waters particularly around Tasmania. they run up streams and rivers to spawn and their spawn runs often cross the spawn runs of both Galaxiid and Smelt as they move to sea to spawn.
