Got a text from from my next door neighbor Tom on Wednesday inviting me out to Masthead on Saturday to target our favourite table fish Red Throat Emperor.
Managed a couple of nice Barr at Lake Awoonga on 21st Sep with this 109cm beast being the best for the night and a new Awoonga personal best for me. And the added bonus was that it was caught on a soft plastic I crafted myself.
This combination, my grub tail prawn, has earned a place in my tackle box as a favourite when scroungers such as fingermark, blue salmon, grunter, mangrove jack, flathead, bigger than average bream and of course rock cod are on the chew.
I have set out my understanding of moon phases below together with an outline of what each phase mean to me in relation to my Barramundi fishing.
There is an old adage – moon rise at night fish at night, moon rise at day fish at day.
I wish it was just that easy for barramundi fishing but of course it is not.

NSW – Online map helps anglers access new fishing spots … so how good is this?
I started making soft plastics in gar fish colours about a year ago in response to identifying that a lot of the buffing of big barramundi that you hear at dusk and into the night is barra targeting garfish. I have now added gar fish inspired colouring to my articulated bugger range and have found that to be a great dawn and dusk time fishing colour combination.
Hopefully this small blog post will keep you in touch with the dates for fishing seasons in NSW for popular species such as bass, trout and cod.
