I have progressively modified the Slickrig by reducing the internal weight so that it swims mid water, have modified the tail so that it swims better at a slow speed, added a subtle rattle to make it easier for barra to detect the lure and finally have added either a spinner or a set of trebles under the lure to induce and convert more hits to hook ups.
This a really neat small diving lure that dives down as much as 3 meters. On 29th September I was fortunate to be invited by Scott McAuley, who I have fished with socially on quite a few occasions, to partner up with him to fish the 2020 Venom – Lake Awoonga Open. Many thanks to Scott … I had a wonderful time and learned so much.
Depending on the water depth this fly can be fished on a floating or fast sink lines but my preference is to stick with a clear intermediate line with a rod length leader and a slow twitchy retrieve with various length pauses.
Fly colours rules of thumb: For bright days bright colours, dark days dark colours, clear water translucent flies in natural colours, dirty water solid colours and match the hatch when possible.

This post is a work in progress and lists the different species of fish I have landed on fly in Central Queensland. I have had a look through my photos from the last couple of years and added those that I have found but there are still some photo gaps which I’ll add as I find the photos or will re-photo next time I catch the fish and add them at that stage. As I get time I will also add some text about each species and also some fly suggestions.
This fly sits well into the surface film like the natural and has a very realistic profile when viewed from below. I have made it smaller than the natural on purpose as flies tied as big as the natural are frustratingly cumbersome to cast on #8 weight outfits that are my preference of the target species mentioned above. The fly lands with a good audible fish attracting ‘plop’ and with its outstretched wings that are only about half as long as the natural still wiggle with the slightest movement in a very enticing way.
